Ponniyin Selvan: I Showtimes is an epic Tamil novel. This novel is authored by amarar kalki. Therefore, many stars and directors dreamed of adopting this classic movie on the big screen. And they failed to bring it to big cinemas. The legendary director Mani Ratnam is one of those who aspired to this movie for the silver screen since the 80s. Finally, he has done it, pinyin selvan was bought to life on screen after almost 70 years by prestigious artists. The stars like Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, and Karthi have played the lead roles. And the music is done by AR Rahman. And here, the years of wait are justified.
This story opens with Aditiha Karikalan played by chiyaan Vikram. Aditha Karikalan, the b prince of the Chola dynasty, is invading the regions in the north of the empire and asking his friends and the army soldier Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan to check on the conspirators who are conspiring for the throne and deliver it to his father. The king and and his sister kudhavai called as Trisha.
He takes a call on the mission and meets with some unexpected twists in his journey. The murderers from the conquered pandya empire infiltrate the Chola kingdom, and the chaos leads to the Chola bloodline destruction. Nandhani, played by Aishwarya Rai, the very young wife, of the old periya pazhuvettarayar (sarathkumar). It is a powerful head of the chalo ministry. As Nandhini captivates pazhuvettarayar and the others, with the beauty to conspire against the king. Rahman, as madhurantaka chola, has the right to descent the throne. And is the key to the conspiracy. As part of the journey, vandhiyathevan was asked to travel to srilanka to meet ponniyin selvan. Well, what happens now? After all, this chaos is what ponniyin selvan is all about. All the subplots and conspires to meet at a high point in Sri Lanka.
Ponniyin Selvan:
Selvans are most significant achievement is staying true to the novel. As a result, the dream project of Mani Ratnam is pulled off, presenting us with the faithful adaptation of this beautiful novel. Kudos to all the writers for carefully writing the brief and detailed screenplay, which will be best for the on-screen adaptation, without diminishing the essence of the novel and without any compromises.
Despite being a great film, we see a positive and organic approach rather than life moments that stay true to Kalki’s vision.
Karthi finds himself drawn to Vandhiyathevan and steals the show with humour, wit and heroism. Shian Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan quickly bring Aditha Karikalan and Nandini’s Kalki to life. Even though they both have limited screen time, they have made sure to perform best among the lot. Trisha gives an excellent performance as Princess Kundhavai, who is not only beautiful but also has a brilliant mind. And also, the Jayam Ravi gives one of the best performances of his career, playing the calm and kind-hearted Prince Arunmozhi Varman.
Sarathkumar proves his acting prowess as a rugged man blinded by beauty. Jayaram and Parthiban gave memorable performances, such as Thirumalaippan and Chinna Pazhuvettarayar. Therefore, the rest of the supportive cast and Lal, Vikram Prabhu, and Ashwin enhance the film.
Therefore, the making of Ponniyin Selvan is very exclusive and refreshing. The casting was excellent. We have seen a lot of period films in mainstream Hindi cinema, but the technicians put their body and soul into this one to give us an experience like we have never had before. Firstly, the action and fight scenes design in a method that looks very reliable. It is undoubtedly one of the best creations of Art Director Tota Tharani and Music Composer A. R. merciful. The songs are appropriate to the situations, and the background recording is the icing on the cake. Ravi Varman’s photographs and Srikar Prasad’s cuts are the two strong pillars that enrich Kalki’s vision.
Mani Ratnam
Let’s not forget Mani Ratnam, the man behind “Punyin Sylvan” and the ship’s captain. The main narrator did not compromise the novel’s authenticity for anything and took us into the story of a thousand years. Filming Kanchipuram, Kadampur, Thanjavur, and Sri Lanka did the novel justice. And also, mani Ratnam has made the movie entertaining for those who have read the novel and those who have no idea about the novel. Even some non-readers are eager to read the book after watching the movie. Therefore, the movie’s running time doesn’t bother the audience too much.
On the downside, at one point, the movie feels like a quick highlight of the events in the book. The movie’s first half The script could have been more interesting to attract the audience. Also, the visual effects look mediocre for a film with high production value. However, Ponniyin Selvan leaves the audience spellbound with his latest act and ends with dramatic suspense for the sequel.
Bunyin Sylvan Part 1 is a believable and believable adaptation of the iconic novel. The best part about this cinematic spectacle is that it’s accurate and good enough to please audiences regardless of their book knowledge.
